Overcoming the Power Degradation Crisis

D6D engine

Recently, a large mining company encountered a severe equipment shutdown crisis under harsh working conditions. One of the client’s main excavators, equipped with a classic Volvo D6D heavy-duty industrial diesel engine, experienced an abnormal and rapid power degradation and severe vibration during continuous high-load operation. Initial on-site inspection revealed that the engine’s speed dropped rapidly under full-load excavation conditions, completely unable to maintain its rated standard operating speed of 2000 RPM. Simultaneously, the actual output power of the equipment decreased significantly, far below its factory-specified peak power of 125 kW. This severe performance degradation meant the excavator not only could not complete its intended earthmoving tasks but also faced an extremely high risk of irreversible structural damage.

Upon receiving the client’s urgent request for assistance, our technical support team quickly intervened and conducted an in-depth analysis of the fault characteristics. By extracting detailed operational data and combining it with on-site disassembly feedback, we discovered that the root cause of the power plunge was the client’s previous misuse of substandard aftermarket fuel injection components in an attempt to save costs. These non-original fuel injectors not only produced extremely poor atomization, leading to severe incomplete combustion, but also caused abnormally high temperatures inside the cylinders, resulting in abnormal stress and minor wear on the core crankshaft system. Faced with this complex mechanical damage, we knew that any repair solution that compromised on substandard parts would be futile. Only by adhering to uncompromising technical precision could this heavy-duty power equipment be truly saved.

With our robust parts logistics system and extensive dimensional database, we quickly and accurately allocated and shipped a complete set of Volvo D6D original specification high-pressure fuel injectors and a high-pressure fuel pump that met strict tolerance standards, as well as a replacement crankshaft assembly that had undergone extremely high-precision calibration. After professional and meticulous reassembly, the excavator demonstrated perfect operating performance during load testing. The engine not only easily recovered and stabilized at a smooth operating speed of 2,000 rpm, but its output power also returned to its peak level of 125 kilowatts. This efficient and precise maintenance not only allowed the equipment to quickly return to the front line of the mine, but also laid a solid mechanical foundation for its long-term stable operating life of over 15,000 hours through the support of high-quality components.
