๐Ÿ”ง Complete Cummins M11 Engine Overhaul Guide (Liners, Pistons, Bearings & Gasket Kit Only)

๐Ÿ“ฆ Components Included in This Overhaul:

  • Cylinder liners (wet sleeves)

  • Pistons, wrist pins, and circlips

  • Piston rings

  • Main bearings (upper and lower)

  • Connecting rod bearings

  • Thrust washers

  • Complete overhaul gasket kit

๐Ÿงฐ Step 1: Preparation

Tools Required:

  • Torque wrench (in lb-ft/Nยทm)

  • Piston ring compressor

  • Liner puller/installer

  • Dial bore gauge

  • Micrometer & plastigage

  • Engine hoist or lifting bracket

  • Clean workbench

Safety:

  • Disconnect battery.

  • Drain coolant, oil, and fuel.

  • Tag all hoses and wiring for easy reassembly.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Step 2: Engine Disassembly

  1. Remove external components:

    • Turbocharger, intake/exhaust manifold

    • Fuel lines, injectors

    • Water pump, fan, serpentine belts

  2. Remove valve cover, rocker arms, and pushrods.

  3. Remove cylinder head.

    • Loosen bolts in reverse sequence using proper torque steps.

  4. Remove oil pan and oil pump.

  5. Remove piston/rod assemblies.

    • Note the cylinder numbers on each rod.

  6. Pull out cylinder liners using a proper liner puller.

๐Ÿ” Step 3: Inspection & Measurements

  • Crankshaft: Check for scoring, taper, and out-of-round.

  • Main bore and rod bore: Verify clearance using plastigage.

  • Cylinder block: Check for cracks, warpage, corrosion.

  • Head deck and block deck flatness: Use straightedge and feeler gauge.

  • Connecting rods: Check for bend or twist.

๐Ÿ“ If any part is out of spec, replace or re-machine as needed before proceeding.

โš™๏ธ Step 4: Component Installation

๐Ÿ”ฉ 1. Cylinder Liners:

  • Clean block bores thoroughly.

  • Apply light oil or sealant as required.

  • Press-fit liners using installation tool.

  • Verify liner protrusion (usually 0.07โ€“0.15 mm) for proper sealing.

๐Ÿ”ฉ 2. Pistons & Rings:

  • Fit piston rings carefully (gap positioning ~120ยฐ apart).

  • Install wrist pin and circlips.

  • Use piston ring compressor to insert into liner.

  • Ensure piston orientation (usually arrow or mark facing front).

๐Ÿ”ฉ 3. Bearings & Thrust Washers:

  • Clean crank journals and bearing seats.

  • Install main bearings and rod bearings (note upper/lower orientation).

  • Install thrust washers at specified main bearing position.

  • Torque to spec in steps. Use plastigage to confirm oil clearances.

๐Ÿงฑ Step 5: Reassembly

  1. Install oil pump and pickup tube.

  2. Install oil pan with new gasket.

  3. Reinstall cylinder head.

    • Use new head gasket from the overhaul kit.

    • Torque in three steps using the factory bolt pattern.

  4. Reinstall rocker arms, pushrods, injectors, manifolds, and turbo.

  5. Connect all hoses, wires, belts.

๐Ÿ”ง Step 6: Initial Startup & Break-In

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Fluids:

  • Fill with fresh oil and coolant.

  • Prime oil system before cranking (hand pump or bypass).

๐Ÿ” First Start:

  • Crank without injectors to build oil pressure.

  • Install injectors and start engine.

  • Monitor for oil pressure, coolant temperature, unusual noises, or smoke.

๐Ÿงช Run-in Procedure:

  • Idle for 15 minutes, then gradually load engine.

  • Avoid full throttle or heavy loads for first 20โ€“30 hours.

  • Change oil and filter after 50 hours.
